You find a fare, click through, fill in your details, and the price on the payment page is higher. It's one of the most frustrating moments in booking a flight. It's also usually explainable.
Search Results Are Often a Snapshot
Checking live availability with every airline for every search would be slow and expensive. So many search engines show fares from a recent snapshot, or cache, and confirm the live price only when you select an option. If the fare sold out or changed since the snapshot, you see the new price at checkout.
Fares Come in Buckets
Airlines sell seats in fare classes, often called buckets. Each bucket has a price and a limited number of seats. When the cheapest bucket sells out, the next seat is sold from a more expensive one. On a busy flight, that can happen between your search and your checkout.
Group Bookings Can Price Higher
Searching for four travelers can show a higher fare per person than searching for one. A common reason: the cheapest bucket has fewer seats left than your group needs. Many booking systems then price everyone on the reservation in the next bucket up, rather than splitting the group across two prices.
The Total Isn't Always Shown Up Front
Other differences come from what's included:
- Baggage and seat fees added during checkout.
- Payment card fees on some sellers and payment methods.
- Currency conversion when a seller prices in a different currency from your card.
What to Do About It
- Recheck before you type. Confirm the live price before you spend ten minutes on passenger details.
- Compare totals, not headline fares. Add the bags and seat you'll actually need.
- Don't assume the price will come back. If a fare jumps because a bucket sold out, it may not reappear.
- Use the 24-hour rule where it applies. If you're booking a US flight a week or more out, a quick booking you can cancel beats a fare that vanishes.
How Wayzuno Handles It
Wayzuno may show cached fares while you compare, and says so. When you select an option, it rechecks the price and the booking paths before sending you to the seller, so the number you act on is as current as possible.
